Established at the request of the People's Commissariat by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on December 22, 1942 (Gazette of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, 1942, No. 47).
According to its regulation, it was to be granted to all defenders of the city - military men of the Red Army, Navy, NKVD and civilians - always with the confirmation of their actual participation, through the lists of military divisions, hospitals...etc.
For 250 days, from November 5, 1941 to July 4, 1942, Soviet troops heroically defended the city of Sevastopol from German troops, only when they ran out of ammunition and food, vastly outnumbered in aircraft and tanks, their defenders withdrew from the city, some evacuated across the Black Sea, others through the mountains where they became partisans.
The medal for the defense of Sevastopol was awarded to more than 50,000 people.
There are two variants, the first variant, which began to be awarded during the war, has the ring soldered to the medal, the second variant, which was awarded later to those who had not received the medal at the time, differs from the first in that the ring and medal are of one piece.
There are 2 variants.
1st Variant: in the USSR coat of arms there are 11 bands and the date is printed as 194
