Instituted by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on May 1, 1944, it was awarded to all defenders of Moscow, both civilian and military, who took part for at least one month during the period from October 19, 1941 to January 25, 1942.
The German troops began the offensive against Moscow on September 31, 1941, after great efforts by the Red Army managed to stop the German attack on the outskirts of Moscow, once received reinforcements and supplied the troops, the Red Army launched a counteroffensive between 7 and 8 January, forcing the German troops to retreat.
The medal was designed by the painter N. I. Moskalev, has a diameter of 32 mm, is made of brass, and there are two variants:
