Instituted by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on May 1, 1944 (Gazette of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, 1944, No. 25).

According to its regulation, it was to be granted to all participants in the defense of the Caucasus - servicemen of the Red Army, Navy, NKVD and civilians - always with the confirmation of their actual participation, through the lists of military divisions, hospitals...etc.

Within the Edelweiss operation the German command led part of Army Group A to occupy the Caucasus and part of the Transcaucasus region in July 1942, the German troops greatly outnumbered the Soviet troops both in men and armament, however the Soviet troops stopped the German offensive and maintained the defense of the Caucasus until October 1943.
