Wiki - Soviet Union - Defense of Stalingrad medal

Established at the request of the People's Commissariat by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on December 22, 1942 (USSR Supreme Soviet Gazette, 1942, No. 47).

According to its regulation, it was to be granted to all the defenders of the city - military men of the Red Army, Navy, NKVD and civilians - always with the confirmation of their real participation, through the lists of military divisions, hospitals...etc.

The defense of Stalingrad lasted from July 12, 1942 to November 19, 1942, occupies a preeminent place in the history of the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet troops found themselves outnumbered both numerically and technically by the German 6th Army of General Paulus. More than 140 days of furious urban fighting and bombardment could not overcome the fierce resistance of the city's defenders, and on November 19, 1942, Soviet forces launched a counteroffensive that ended with the 6th Army encircled and defeated. On May 1, 1945 the city of Stalingrad received the title of "Hero City".

The Stalingrad defense medal was awarded to approximately 760,000 people.
