Instituted by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of June 9, 1945, it was awarded to all the defenders of Moscow, both civilian and military, who took part in the assault and occupation of Berlin between April 22 and May 2, 1945.
 
The battle for Berlin was one of the fiercest and bloodiest of World War II. On the Soviet side, 3,500,000 men, 52,000 guns, 7,750 tanks and more than 10,000 aircraft took part.
 
The medal was designed by the painter A. I. Kuznetsov, has a diameter of 32 mm, is made of brass.
 
 
The Berlin capture medal was awarded to approximately 1,100,000 people.

There are four variants, the first variant has the ring soldered to the medal, the second variant differs from the first in that the ring and medal are of one piece and that the medal is U-shaped, the third variant is also of one piece but with a round and flat ring, while the fourth variant is of one piece but its ring is round and with rounded edges.
