Instituted on December 20, 1939 to reward the crews of tanks (silver category), later on June 1, 1940 the bronze category was instituted for the crews of self-propelled guns and auxiliary troops of the armored units.

Troops could be decorated with this badge if they could prove that they had participated in three combat engagements on different days.

In June 1943, the 25, 50, 75 and 100 combat categories were introduced.
