Instituted on June 1, 1940 to award German Army troops who belonged neither to the infantry nor to the armored units.
 
Troops could be decorated with this badge if they could prove that they had participated in three battles on different days. 
 
On June 22, 1943, the 25, 50, 75 and 100 combat categories were introduced.

The badge was first made in tombak, later it was made in zink, there are hollow (stamped), semi-hollow and solid models.
