Instituted on August 2, 1939 to award those who designed and built the fortifications of the western zone and later also awarded to members of the Wehrmacht who had served there for at least 10 weeks.
 
The medal was first made in tombak, later it was made in zink. The medal was presented in a paper envelope with the text "Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen ".
 
More than 800,000 medals were awarded.
