Issued on May 26, 1942 to reward the troops who had suffered the terrible winter of 1941, when the Wehrmacht had to resist the Soviet counterattack without winter equipment.
 
 
 
The medal is 36mm in diameter, is made of zink, originally the center was lacquered in black and the rim and hull in silver, but it is a very common that the lacquer has been lost and only the zink is visible. The medal was presented in a paper envelope with the text "Winterslacht in Osten 1941/42".
