Reinstated on September 1, 1939 by Adolf Hitler, to award for bravery in combat to members of the armed forces, it was also awarded to foreigners and civilians.
 
 
 
The 1st and 2nd class crosses were manufactured with a two-piece nickel frame, and a black lacquered iron center, the frame of the Knight's Cross was silver.
