Instituted by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on June 9, 1945, it was awarded to all participants, both civilian and military, who took part in the assault and occupation of Königsberg between January 23 and April 10, 1945.
The city of Königsberg was the capital of East Prussia, a powerful defensive stronghold with five German divisions defending the city. After the war and according to the Potsdam Conference, Königsberg and its surrounding area became Soviet territory, changing its name to Kaliningrad.
The medal was designed by painter A. I. Kuznetsov, has a diameter of 32 mm, is made of brass.
The medal for the capture of Königsberg was awarded to approximately 760,000 people.
Collecting the medal:
There are four variants, the first variant has the ring soldered to the medal, the second variant differs from the first in that the ring and medal are of one piece and that the medal is U-shaped, the third variant is also of one piece but with a round and flat ring, while the fourth variant is of one piece but its ring is round and with rounded edges.
